The Upper Wawa Dam, the second phase of the Wawa Bulk Water Supply, is on course to begin operations by the end of 2025 with its progress currently over 70 percent.
The project led by Prime Infra’s WawaJVCo Inc. will provide a water capacity of over 700 million liters per day (MLD) and benefit the residents of the greater Metro Manila area including those in the Rizal province.
“The exceptional construction pace at Upper Wawa Dam showcases Prime Infra’s commitment to delivering on our commitments in developing water supply infrastructure at this scale,” Guillaume Lucci, Prime Infra president and chief executive officer said.
“We are pleased that the project continues to be materially ahead of schedule. We take great pride in ensuring that we sustain this pace and do so safely by 2025,” he added.
As part of the government’s infrastructure flagship projects, the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project in Rizal will address water security, specifically in the MWSS service area.
Apart from providing a water supply, the dam will also aid in mitigating the problem of flooding in the downstream areas and localities of the Marikina River.
The project, which has been the largest water supply dam for over 50 years since the Angat Dam was built, will increase Manila Water Company’s (MWC) capacity by over 30 percent of its current water allocation from the Angat Dam of approximately 1,600 MLD.
The first phase of the project or the Tayabasan Weir has been delivering the initial 80 MLD since it began operations in 2022.
Reforestation activities around the site of the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project of 1,800 hectares are also being implemented with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, WawaJVCo stated.
“In developing this project, we aim to build a legacy by prioritizing environmental sustainability and fostering long-term partnerships with our host communities,” said Melvin John Tan, president of WawaJVCo. And Prime Infra Market Sector Lead for Water.
