Roxas cops in Or. Mindoro give gifts to law-abiding motorists

Motorcycle riders in Roxas town of Oriental Mindoro were confused and were actually scared when policemen started flagging them down in various checkpoints on Christmas day.
But they heaved a sigh of relief later when they later found out why— they were given gifts for being law-abiding citizens.
Police Capt. Clyde Kalyawen, chief of police of Roxas Municipal Police Station, said the gift-giving is their way of showing appreciation for contributing to the peace and order of the town simply by following the law.
"As part of this project, we aim to encourage both motorists and the community in the municipality of Roxas to abide by the law, especially when traveling in different types of vehicles," said Kalyawen.
He said the project, dubbed as Project "BANAYAD" or Building an Advanced Network for Accomplishing Better Yields and Development towards Enhancing Traffic Safety, is aimed at promoting and ensuring a smooth flow of traffic in the town.

He said the project is also focused on enhancing road safety, encouraging responsible and disciplined driving practices, and creating a safer and more efficient road environment for motorists and the community in the municipality.
Kalyawen, however, said the violators caught in the checkpoints were also issued citation tickets.
"We appreciate those who comply with the law, but we also want to send a message to those who continue to violate traffic rules and regulations," said Kalyawen.
"We will remain steadfast in our commitment to public safety, especially during the holidays," he added.
