‘Pasko sa Nayon’ in Dapitan gives back to community

CEBU CITY – Christmas is the season of giving and this was best typified in Dapitan City through its “Pasko sa Nayon” project.

Pasko sa Nayon is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the local government unit (LGU) to give back to the community and spread joy during the Yuletide season.

Spearheaded by the office of Councilor Joseph Ryan Acaylar Agolong, Pasko sa Nayon offered free full board meals or heavy snacks to residents during the nine-evening “Simbang Gabi” or dawn Mass from December 15 to 23.

This compassionate endeavor, now in its 10th year, serves as a beacon of hope and solidarity, embodying the true essence of Christmas as a time for giving and sharing, Agolong said.

Agolong, following in the footsteps of his benevolent parents, Alvi and Apple Marie, was driven by his deep-rooted desire to share blessings with those in need.

The younger Agolong’s unwavering dedication to uplifting the lives of others has been instrumental in the success and longevity of Pasko sa Nayon.

“The impact of this initiative extends far beyond the provision of meals; it fosters a sense of togetherness, compassion, and unity among the residents of Dapitan City,” he said.

Dapitan Mayor Seth Frederick Jalosjos and Zamboanga del Norte Gov. Rosalina “Nene” Jalosjos, along with supporters, have played a pivotal role in championing this noble cause.

“Their unwavering support has been instrumental in ensuring the continued success of Pasko sa Nayon, enriching the lives of countless individuals and families in Dapitan City,”  Joseph Ryan said.

According to him, the profound impact of Pasko sa Nayon serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of kindness and generosity, inspiring others to embrace the spirit of giving and extend a helping hand to those in need.

“Pasko sa Nayon started during the administration of Gov. Nene when she was still the mayor of Dapitan. It was continued when Mayor Seth became the mayor. I used to be the one who facilitates the program but I passed it on to Ryan, who really enjoyed doing it and felt fulfilled watching the kids’ faces waiting for their free meals,” said Apple Marie, city tourism officer.
