16 fireworks-related injuries recorded ahead of Christmas celebrations

Christmas celebrations resulted in 16 new cases of fireworks-related injuries in the country, bringing the total number of cases this holiday season to 28, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Monday, Dec. 25.

The injured individuals ranged in age from six to 35, based on DOH’s monitoring between Dec. 24 and 25.

Ninety-four percent of incidents happened in homes or on the streets, with Metro Manila accounting for 31 percent of those.

Moreover, there were seven legal fireworks involved in these incidents.

Under Republic Act 7183 and Executive Order 28 series of 2017, the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices are regulated and controlled.

“It is unsafe to use any firework, legal or illegal, at home or nearby streets [as] many victims are not even involved in lighting them,” the DOH pointed out.

One eye injury suffered by a bystander in an area designated for fireworks was among the new cases.

It noted that 10.36 percent of all injuries caused by fireworks involved “passive involvement.”

“Fireworks use both at or near the home and even at designated areas can still harm even those not lighting them. It is better for professionals at community fireworks displays to do the show, with watchers far away at a safe distance,” the DOH advised.
