Nancy Binay urges DOTr to avoid repeat of holiday travel chaos
Senator Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay said she expects the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and other transport authorites to ensure there would be no repeat of the travelers’ unpleasant and frustrating experience brought about by technical and operational glitches in airports, seaports and public terminals this holiday season.
Binay said she hopes to see the DOTr put its best foot forward to guarantee there would be no power outages and technical glitches that crippled aviation and airport operations last January 1 and May 1 of this year at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) happening again.
The power outages grounded and cancelled over 600 flights and left tens of thousands of passengers stranded.
“I am positive that the DOTr has already made concrete steps to prevent any operational disruptions during this Christmas travel peak,” Binay said.
“Sana self-aware na ang ating mga opisyal ng DOTr dahil ayaw na rin nating maulit muli yung nangyaring 'di magandang experience ng mga kababayan nating byahero nitong taon (I hope DOTr officials have a sense of self-awareness because we do not want a repeat of our citizens’ bad travel experience this year,” she pointed out.
Transport authorities, she said, should also guard not only airports, but also seaports and bus public terminals during this season.
“Tiyak na magdadagsaan ang mga magbabakasyon para makahabol sa pasko't bagong taon (There will certainly be an influx of vacationers to catch up on Christmas and New Year),” Binay said.
Binay expressed hope that Filipinos would be able to travel and go home to their respective provinces smoothly and safely, without also compromising safety and security.
“We hope that all the ships that will sail will be sea-worthy and without overbooking. Even in our bus terminals, there should be a simplified system for passengers to have a convenient way through security screenings,” she stressed.
At the same time, Binay appealed to travelers to cooperate with security personnel when passing through the usual screening process, and prepare for reasonable delays in schedule.
"Hindi naman ito bago sa atin maging sa (This is not new even to our) DOTr. Everyone expects some degree of chaos from point of origin to destination. What we expect from our transport officials is to manage the string of chaos that is expected, and put to work measures necessary to avert another holiday meltdown,” she said.
“I am optimistic that (Transportation) Secretary (Jaime) Bautista will make sure that everone will be home on Christmas, and do everything so that passengers won’t be confronted with travel disruptions until the new year,” she further said.
