DOH urges public to take into account pet anxiety caused by fireworks
The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday, Dec. 24 issued guidelines for reducing "anxiety," "restlessness," and other signs of "discomfort" in pets during celebrations with fireworks.

In line with the department's initiative "Bawat Buhay Mahalaga," DOH said the public should acknowledge the physical and emotional well-being of pets as fireworks can trigger "heightened fight-or-flight response in dogs."
"Let's ensure the holistic well-being of our cherished companions, particularly during festive occasions marked by fireworks," said DOH.
DOH advised the public with different actions to be done in creating "safe spaces" for pets during loud fireworks displays.
The department suggested the pet owners keep the dogs indoors to avoid risks of them running away due to fear or particularly put the dogs in a quiet room with comforting items.
Usage of calming wraps, vests, or shirts to help bring the pets gentle pressure is also helpful to release stress in dogs, DOH said.
DOH also suggested helping the dogs get used to firework sounds prior to heavy fireworks displays and making them perceive it positively could also be done.
"Together, let's establish an environment where every life, including our pets', is valued and protected," DOH said.
