Cyclist dies after being run over by bus in Sampaloc

A cyclist died after accidentally being hit and run over by a passenger bus in Sampaloc, Manila on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 24.

The Manila Police District (MPD) Vehicular Traffic Investigation Section (VTIS) identified the victim as Russel Tapayan, 33, resident of Barangay Culliat, Quezon City.

According to the police initial report, the victim was traveling along the eastbound lane of Lerma Street in Sampaloc around 2:30 p.m.

Police said that when the victim reached a certain spot near R. Papa Street, his bicycle's back portion was hit by the bus, driven by Are Jay De Castro.

They added that the bus also ran over and dragged the victim for several meters, resulting in his immediate death.

Authorities are still conducting further investigation, while the bus driver is under the custody of the University Belt Area Police Community Precinct (UBA PCP) and will face charges of homicide with damage to property.
