Thompson confirms Racela's hiring for Altas post, denies SMC backing

Less than a week after NCAA Season 99 wrapped up, Perpetual is already making its move to bolster its team heading into the centennial season.

Altas former star and team manager Scottie Thompson confirmed talks to bring PBA great and former FEU mentor as Perpetual’s new coach next season.

Olsen Racela already agreed ‘in principle’ and that there are some things being ironed out before the concurrent Barangay Ginebra assistant coach formally makes his return to the collegiate scene.

"We're happy na, kinausap ako ng management and try to get coach Olsen para sa team, 'yon nga, I think so far all good naman. Sana mag tuloy-tuloy,”  Thompson said after their win over Meralco, 110-96, in 2023 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday, Dec. 22.

"I think confirmed na na itetake na ni coach [Olsen Racela] yung coaching job as head coach sa Perpetual,” he added.

With Racela taking the helm, last season’s head coach Myk Saguiguit is set to slide to an assistant coaching role for the Altas who came tantalizingly short of making it to the Final Four last season.

Perpetual finished in tie with Jose Rizal University at the fifth to sixth places with identical 10-8 record.

“We're happy na onboard siya and of course, we're happy din si coach Myk (Saguiguit) still part of the team,” said Thompson.

In contrast to the rumors, Thompson denied any backing of the SMC group, clarifying that the talks are only between him and Racela.

“And wala pong involvement ang SMC dito, no. Just me and coach Olsen ang nag usap, inutusan ako ng management ng Perpetual na itry kontakin si coach Olsen kasi syempre Ginebra ako, and convince him to take the job,” he added.
