Magnitude 5.5 quake jolts Surigao del Sur


A magnitude 5.5 earthquake rocked Lingig, Surigao del Sur at 10:22 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 59 kilometers (km) northeast of Lingig, Surigao del Sur at a shallow depth of 10 km.

Phivolcs said the tremor was weak at Intensity III in City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.

Its instruments also recorded Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin or caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said there were no expecting damages, however, aftershocks are possible.
