The decision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to increase the lifetime monthly gratuity pay for Medal of Valor awardees boosted the morale and welfare of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), according to an official.

Col. Xerxes Trinidad, chief of AFP public affairs office, said the gesture not only acknowledged the indomitable courage displayed by the heroes but will also have a profound impact on their families.

"This boost in gratuity pay resonates deeply within the ranks of the AFP, elevating morale and welfare. It serves as a testament to the administration's dedication to recognizing and uplifting our military personnel," Trinidad said.

"The ripple effect on the overall well-being of our armed forces is immeasurable, fostering a sense of pride and motivation among our servicemen and women," he added.

Further, the military considered the enhanced support as a fulfillment of the national government's commitment to valuing the sacrifices made by the troops for the nation's security.

"We extend our gratitude to President Marcos for this momentous decision, which not only honors our heroes but also strengthens the fabric of support and care for those who have dedicated their lives to the defense of our nation," Trinidad underscored.

During the 88th founding anniversary of the AFP last Dec. 21, Marcos granted an increase in the lifetime monthly gratuity pay of the Medal of Valor awardees.

The Medal of Valor is the highest combat award given by the AFP to a soldier who performed "a deed of personal bravery or self-sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty so conspicuously as to distinguish him above his comrades."

There are 41 Medal of Valor awardees to date.

Under Republic Act 9049, a Medal of Valor awardee is entitled to a lifetime monthly gratuity pay of P20,000 which is separate from the pension and salary s/he is receiving. Then President Rodrigo Duterte increased the gratuity pay to P75,000 in 2016.

In case that the award is posthumously given, the gratuity pay goes to their spouse or children.
