The implementation of the expanded number coding scheme in the metropolis is suspended from Dec. 25 to 26 and Jan. 1, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Friday, Dec. 22.

“Suspendido ang pagpapatupad ng expanded number coding scheme sa mga susunod na araw ngayong holiday season: • Lunes, Disyembre 25, Christmas Day; Martes, Disyembre 26; at Lunes, Enero 1, 2024, New Year's Day (The implementation of the expanded number coding scheme is suspended on the following days this holiday season: • Monday, December 25, Christmas Day; Tuesday, December 26; and Monday, January 1, 2024, New Year's Day),” the agency posted on Facebook.

Per the MMDA Traffic update on Dec. 21 around 7 p.m., vehicular traffic along the northbound, and southbound portion of EDSA were “moderate to slow moving.”

It can be recalled that the agency has earlier cautioned the public that traffic in Metro Manila could become more congested as Christmas Day approaches.

Meanwhile, the agency has reminded holiday travelers to always plan their travels, obey traffic laws, and drive cautiously.

It is also worth noting that MMDA's Traffic Discipline Office staff extended their job hours in preparation for the massive influx of vehicles expected in the National Capital Region (NCR) over the holiday season.

Earlier, the MMDA announced that malls in the metropolis will open at 11 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. from Nov. 13 to Jan. 8, 2024. This modification aims to alleviate the expected traffic congestion during the Christmas rush.
