DOTr cancels taxi company's franchise due to overpriced meter rate

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has cancelled a taxi company’s franchise to operate after one of its units allegedly charged overpriced rates to its passengers.

DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista said the operator and driver of the airport taxi involved in the overcharging of at least P10,000 to foreign passengers at NAIA have already been identified.

Bautista did not reveal the identities of the operator and driver. However, he said that the driver was already in the province.

Bautista said the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will take the lead in the conduct of an investigation and filing of appropriate complaints against the operator and driver.

He said those involved in the alleged taxi scam will be given a chance to explain their side as part of due process.

The LTFRB earlier stated that it will investigate a taxi driver whose video of handing of an “airport meter rate” to a tourist went viral on social media.

In the video, it can be seen that taxi rates charged to tourists cost P10,300 to P13,500 from NAIA to destinations in Metro Manila.
