The 30-day suspension order slapped against SMNI is part of the process to holding the controversial television network accountable.
Thus, said Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas in a statement Thursday afternoon, Dec. 21 after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) handed down the suspension order against SMNI.
Brosas said the suspension order from NTC "appears to be a response aimed at addressing the network's numerous past violations".
"The suspension of SMNI's operations is a necessary step in holding them accountable for their actions and ensuring that they face consequences for their violations," said the Makabayan lawmaker.
"It further underscores the need to address the spread of disinformation and threats through various media platforms," she noted.
SMNI's woes began when it aired through one of its programs the rumor that House Speaker Martin Romualdez had spent a whopping P1.8 billion on his travels. This was later proved to be fake news in the hearings of the House Committee on Legislative Franchises.

"For the longest time, the SMNI and the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict has been working hand-in-hand in spreading fake news and disinformation, targeting activists and progressive organizations," claimed Brosas.
Earlier this month, the 300-plus strong House of Representatives adopted a resolution urging the NTC to suspend the operations of SMNI in connection with its various infractions on its legislative franchise.
"We call for a thorough investigation into SMNI's violations and urge the NTC to enforce sanctions as necessary," Brosas said.
"The relentless red-tagging and dissemination of disinformation have serious consequences on the safety and security of the Filipino people, and those responsible must be held accountable," she underscored.
