No LPA, cyclone during Christmas weekend, says PAGASA

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said there is a slim chance of a low pressure area or tropical cyclone developing inside the country’s area of responsibility during the Christmas weekend.

"For the next two weeks, we don't see any TCLV (Tropical Cyclone Light Vortex) that will enter the PAR (Philippine area of responsibility)," PAGASA-Climatology and Agrometeorology Division (CAD) Weather Specialist Joey Figuracion said in a forum on Dec. 20.

Figuracion explained that the "suppressed" condition of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) affected the likelihood of tropical cyclone formation, which means that there is unfavorable precipitation and fewer cloud formations.

PAGASA defined MJO as the "intra-seasonal eastward-moving disturbance of clouds, winds, rainfall, and pressure that circles tropical areas in 30 to 60 days oscillation."

PAGASA said MJO can enhance or suppress the rainfall and can modulate tropical cyclone in the country.
