Razon-led Manila Water Co., Inc. said it is committed to promote responsible energy use and sustainability through its Boracay island unit, extending its impact beyond clean water delivery.

In a statement, Adrian Bryan Magallanes, Boracay Island Water Co., Inc., general manager, said that the Manila Water’s non-East Zone subsidiary is committed to continually improve its energy efficiency and sustainability practices.

“We will continue our aggressive drive to pursue responsible energy use and sustainability,” Magallanes said.

Acknowledging Boracay Water's efforts, the Department of Energy (DOE) awarded the utility firm for its energy efficiency initiatives, presenting it with the Special Awards in Energy Efficiency Excellence category.

This recognition was specifically awarded under the Energy Efficiency Projects Implemented and Other Best Practices subcategory.

According to Manila Water, the provincial concessionaire improved their power utilization by bringing down 0.54 kilowatt-hours per cubic meter (kWh/cu.m)  to 0.44 kilowatt-hour kWh/cu.m.

From 2018 to 2022., the substantial energy savings of Boracay Water brought about 1.4 million kWh, which is equivalent to saving P13.9 million in costs.

Subsequently, the yearly average savings was reduced by 17 percent, or 467,092 kWh per year from the baseline energy consumption.

The average annual cost saved up to P4.63 million per year, equaling 19 percent of the baseline energy cost.

“The DOE EEE Award, an annual recognition program, acknowledges companies, projects, government sectors, and individuals for their exemplary best practices in energy efficiency. Notably, this achievement marks a historic milestone for us as it clinches its very first award in this prestigious category,” Manila Water said.

Melvin John Tan, the Chief Operating Officer for Non-East Zone Manila Water shared its commitment to delivering clean water and other green efforts.

“Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and at Manila Water, our journey begins with Energy Efficiency as the initial step toward achieving Net Zero,” Tan said.

Mark T. Lapid, the Chief Operating Officer of The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), also commended Manila Water as its partner in environmental projects.

“This achievement highlights the exceptional nature of TIEZA collaboration with Manila Water in Boracay,” he said.

Manila Water continues to go beyond clean water by improving the energy efficiency landscape.

Earlier this year, they were able to obtain an Energy Efficiency Award from the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP).
