DMW backs calls for safety of seafarers in Red Sea, Gulf of Eden amid attacks

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has joined the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) in advocating for the safety and well-being of seafarers sailing the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, in the wake of recent drone, missile, and rocket attacks on marine vessels traversing the key shipping route.

“Our overwhelming priority is to ensure the safety of our kababayans at sea. We are deeply concerned over the increasing number of attacks on marine vessels and the danger this poses to seafarers,” said DMW officer-in-charge Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac.

DMW records state that as of October 2023, there were 488,606 Filipinos working as seafarers, of whom 857,540 were officers and the remaining 1,035,180 were skilled seafarers.

“Filipino seafarers are the most hardworking and trustworthy workers, and we will never cease to monitor and promote their safety and well-being on board ships that are their welcome workplaces,” said Cacdac.

Meanwhile, ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton said the organization's top priority is the safety of seafarers, stating that shipping corporations should share the concern.

ITF stated that global shipping corporations Maersk, Hapag Lloyd, and the Mediterranean Shipping Company redirected their vessels through the Cape of Good Hope near Africa's southern tip.

The rerouting adds 3,000 nautical miles to their vessels' normal routes as well as weeks to crew members' tours of duty at sea. The logistical effects of the extended route and tours also affect the delivery schedules of goods and services.
