PNP vows to run after brains behind Marawi City bomb attack
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has created teams to identify and run after the persons behind the bombing gymnasium of the Mindanao State University- Marawi Campus on Sunday morning, Dec. 3, that left at least four people dead and scores others injured.
In a statement, PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said police teams are now coordinating with other local authorities in Marawi City in conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
“Our dedicated teams are on the ground, diligently working to establish the facts and identify the individuals or groups responsible for this despicable act,” said Fajardo.
“The PNP remains committed to prioritizing the safety and security of our citizens. We are determined to bring those responsible for this tragedy to justice and will provide the public with updates on any significant developments in the investigation,” she added.
Based on the police report, an explosive device went off around 7 a.m. at the Dimaporo Gymnasium where a religious activity was being held. At least four people were confirmed dead while several others were injured.
Police said mass is celebrated at the Dimaporo Gymnasium every Sunday morning.
“Immediate medical attention is being provided to the injured victims, and arrangements are being made to ensure they receive the best possible care. We understand the pain and grief this incident has caused the community, and we stand in solidarity with the people of Marawi City,” said Fajardo.
Police Brig. Gen. Allan Nobleza, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR) director, said investigation is still being conducted to determine the type of explosive material used in the attack.
The determination of the type of bomb usually leads police investigators to the groups or individuals responsible based on past bombing incidents.
Retaliatory attack?
Nobleza said part of the investigation is to determine if there is a link between the bomb attack in Marawi City and the death of 11 members of the Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) in a military operation in Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur on Dec. 1.
Among those killed in the attack is Abdullah Sapal, the declared amir of the group.
“This is one of the angles that we are now looking into. We are looking if there’s a connection,” said Nobleza.
Appeal
Fajardo said the PNP extends its deepest condolences with the families and friends of those who were injured and lost their lives in the bomb attack.
“We understand the pain and grief this incident has caused the community, and we stand in solidarity with the people of Marawi City,” said Fajardo.
“As the investigations are ongoing, we appeal to the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to allow our investigative teams to complete their work. We appreciate the cooperation of the community in assisting us in gathering relevant information that may contribute to the resolution of this case,” Fajardo added.
