The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) announced its intensified efforts to raise awareness about human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and prevent its spread as the country marks World AIDS Day.

In a statement released on Saturday, Dec. , the PRC noted its chapters nationwide will conduct a series of activities, including training volunteers and peer educators, disseminating HIV prevention information, and organizing HIV and AIDS awareness lectures.
These efforts come as the Department of Health (DOH) reported a 21 percent increase in the number of Filipinos contracting HIV in 2022 compared to the previous year.
"We honor the memory of those who have lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses, and we reaffirm our commitment to combating stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV by dispelling myths and stereotypes," PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Gordon said.
"The PRC stands in solidarity with communities in advancing HIV awareness and prevention," he added.
For her part, PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang expressed gratitude to the communities, stakeholders, and individuals who have supported the PRC's chapters in implementing HIV prevention and care campaigns.
"Thank you for your unwavering support in reaching those who need it most," she said.
