'Transport crisis' looms, Makabayan solon warns

House Deputy Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro has called on President Marcos to listen to the concerns of the transport sector amid the looming threat of a “transport crisis”. 

Castro warned that if the Dec. 31 deadline for the franchise consolidation applications of the public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program pushes through, millions of commuters would be affected. 

“With more than 68,000 [PUVs] still unconsolidated two weeks before its deadline, I think that the ‘transport crisis’ PISTON (Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide) warned about is indeed in the horizon and it would affect at least 28.5 million commuters,” the lawmaker said in a statement. 

“Marapat na itigil na ito ng Marcos administration at pakinggan ang mga transport groups,” she added. 

(The Marcos administration should stop this and listen to the transport groups.) 

Castro claimed that the Marcos administration is pushing for the PUV modernization program to phase out traditional jeepneys and allow large corporations and foreign firms to control the transportation sector. 

The Makabayan bloc member said this would strip drivers of their livelihood. 

“Pipilayin nito ang transportasyon sa bansa at maging ang ating ekonomiya. Ilulugmok din nito ang mga micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) tulad ng mga malilit na operators ng bansa,” she noted. 

(This will cripple transportation in the country and even our economy. This will also sink MSMEs such as small operators in the country.) 

Makabayan solons recently filed a House resolution urging the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to scrap the upcoming Dec. 31 deadline. 

According to PISTON’s X (formerly Twitter) account, “around 140,000 drivers and 60,000 small operators” will lose their work by Jan 1, 2024. --Dexter Barro II
