Long overdue.
That's how Makabayan solon ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro described the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board's (MTRCB) 14-day preventive suspension against two shows on the controversial television network SMNI.
"This suspension is long overdue but at last now something has been done to curtail the constant red-tagging, spreading of disinformation (fake news) and threatening of individulas using these two shows as well as the network," Castro said.
The House deputy minority leader was referring to SMNI programs "Laban Kasama ang Bayan" and "Gikan Sa Masa, Para Sa Masa".
Laban Kasama ang Bayan was suspended over the unverified report on House Speaker Martin Romualdez's alleged P1.8-billion travel funds, while Gikan Sa Masa, Para Sa Masa was suspended over death threats and profane language by guests on two episodes.
"Hopefully this marks the start of SMNI and the people behind it being made accountable. The authorities should look into the pattern and consistent red-tagging, terrorist-labelling for longer and more decisive measures," Castro said.
The lady solon was the subject of the alleged death threat issued by former president Rodrigo Duterte on Gikan Sa Masa. Castro sued the latter for grave threat.
Duterte and Castro were summoned to appear before the prosecutor’s office on Dec. 4 and 11 to kickstart an investigation into the latter’s complaint. However, Duterte failed to attend the scheduled hearings.
The charges stemmed from Duterte’s statement in which he labeled Castro as a communist and expressed his desire to harm her.
These remarks were made in defense of the request for confidential funds for the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education (DepEd), both under his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte.
The House of Representatives had previously redirected the confidential funds from DepEd and OVP to government agencies responsible for securing the West Philippine Sea (WPS) amid China's continuous harassment.
As for the P1.8-billion travel spree allegation raised by Laban Kasama Ang Bayan anchors Jeffrey "Ka Eric" Celiz and Lorraine Badoy against Speaker Romualdez, this was proven as fake news during a series of hearings by the House Committee on Legislative Franchises.
Celiz and Badoy were cited in contempt during the course of the hearings for their perceived refusal to cooperate in the House inquiry.
