PH seeks election to UN Security Council, vows to become 'partner, pathfinder, peacemaker'
The Philippines committed to become "partner, pathfinder and peacemaker" when it presented its candidature to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Philippine Permanent Mission to the UN and other International Organizations Representative Evangelina Lourdes Bernas made the commitment as she pushed for the country’s bid to become the member of the body for the term 2027-2028 during a reception on Dec. 14.
Aside from introducing the country's three main commitments, Bernas also gave assurance that the Philippines will build partnerships for peace and sustainable development.
She also affirmed the country's dedication “to finding enduring solutions for overcoming common challenges through dialogue, consensus-building, and collaborative problem-solving."
"Ambassador Bernas also made special mention of the country’s long history in actively participating in UN peacekeeping and special political missions, having deployed over 14,000 men and women in the last 60 years," the DFA said Tuesday, Dec. 19.
Elections for the UNSC 2027-2028 term will take place in New York in June 2026.
The Philippines had previously been elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC in 195, 1963, 1980-1981, and 2004-2005.
President Marcos announced the Philippines' candidacy to become UNSC member during the 77th United Nations General Assembly in September 2022.
