2 injured in Tondo fire, 300 families affected

A firefighter and a senior citizen were injured in a fire that gutted around 100 houses of 300 families in Tondo, Manila on Tuesday evening, Dec. 19.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) identified the senior citizen as Julieta Rodemo, 75, who sustained superficial burns on her right foot. She was brought to Tondo General Medical Center.

The injured firefighter was identified as Philip Chua, 25, who sustained a minor laceration on his right palm. 

The BFP said the fire allegedly started from the second floor of a three-story house along Lacson corner Capulong Street in Tondo. 

The fire was raised to the first alarm at 9:41 p.m. and was immediately raised to the second alarm at 9:55 p.m. as the houses were made of light materials, the BFP said.

The fire reached the third alarm at 10:03 p.m. and escalated to the fourth alarm at 10:21 p.m.

Firefighters had to raise an alarm and initiated a water relay because the hydrant was weak.

They raised the fire to the fifth alarm at 11:02 p.m.

The blaze was placed under control at 12:25 a.m. on Dec. 20 and was extinguished at 2:07 a.m.

The BFP added that the fire caused damage worth P1.5-million.

According to arson investigators, some affected families are temporarily sheltered at the covered court on Capulong Street.

The authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
