57 former communist rebels receive P1.2-M financial, livelihood aid

BACOLOD CITY – The provincial government of Negros Occidental turned over livelihood and cash assistance amounting to P1,260,000 to 57 former members of the New People’s Army (NPA) on Monday, December 18.

FIFTY-SEVEN former members of the New People’s Army (NPA) and Rebolusyonaryong Partidong Manggagawa ng Pilipinas/Revolutionary Proletarian Army/Alex Boncayao Brigade-Tabara Paduano Group (RPM-P/RPA/ABB-TPG) receive livelihood and financial assistance amounting to P1.2 million from the provincial government of Negros Occidental in a ceremony held at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol building in Bacolod City on Monday, December 18.
 

Forty-two rebel returnees each received P30,000 cash aid while 15 others received carabaos. The cash assistance was given through the Local Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.

The distribution held at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol building here was led by Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, in the presence of Brig. Gen. Orlando Edralin, commander of Army 303rd Infantry Brigade (IBde), Lt. Col. Van Donald Almonte, commander of 94th Infantry Battalion (IB), Police Col. Leo Pamitan, Negros Occidental police director, and Anne Marie Lucasan, officer-in-charge of the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO).

The 42 rebel returnees were former members of Central Negros 2 (CN2)-Komiteng Rehiyon Negros Cebu Bohol Siquijor (KR-NCBS) who surrendered to the 94th IB in the last quarter of 2022 and first quarter of this year.

The rest were former members of the Rebolusyonaryong Partidong Manggagawa ng Pilipinas/Revolutionary Proletarian Army/Alex Boncayao Brigade-Tabara Paduano Group (RPM-P/RPA/ABB-TPG) who are now members of Kapatiran para sa Progresibong Panlipunan (Kapatiran), according to the Army.

Edralin cited the provincial government and 94th IB for their unwavering support to former rebels. "This is solid evidence that the local government of Negros Occidental is sincere in its commitment to help former rebels start anew, live normal lives again, and unite with their families,” Edralin said.

Major Gen. Marion Sison, commander of 3rd Infantry Division (ID), lauded the provincial government for supporting and empowering these former rebels as they return to mainstream society.

“We look forward to more rebels laying down their firearms and embracing peace and development," Sison said in a statement.
