An infectious disease expert on Monday, Dec. 18 said that while wearing a facemask is “optional,” it is encouraged to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses.

“The wearing of a mask is still optional because it is an individual's decision if they want an additional layer of protection, especially those with disabilities, the elderly, and vulnerable populations, such as the immunocompromised, and those with comorbidities,” Rontgene Solante said in Filipino in an interview with TeleRadyo Serbisyo.
He said the "encouragement" to wear facemasks extends to social gatherings, as long as people take proper precautions.
Solante warned that failure to do so, could result in severe infections, particularly among vulnerable populations.
Moreover, addressing the timing and frequency of flu vaccination, the expert emphasized the importance of an “annual” vaccination regimen.
"The administration of the flu vaccine typically begins in April, May, June, and July to prepare for the increase of cases beginning in September. What usually happens is that we only become aware of vaccination when the cases start to increase, which is already late," he said.
Meanwhile, as the Covid-19 Omicron XBB 1.5 variant continues to pose challenges in the country, Solante shared his thoughts on the potential outlook for 2024.
"If we don't change in terms of individual protection, such as wearing facemasks, handwashing, and avoiding crowded places, the number of Covid cases in the country will indeed increase by the end of December or early January," the expert said.
Solante emphasized that the threat is not limited to Covid-19, but also includes co-circulation with Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and other respiratory viruses.
Moreover, he stressed the need for a comprehensive and proactive approach to public health, encompassing not only Covid-19 but also the co-circulation of various respiratory viruses, highlighting the importance of individual responsibility in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
