LPA becomes tropical depression 'Kabayan', to make landfall within 24 hours
Signal No. 1 raised over parts VisMin
At A Glance
- Tropical depression Kabayan was seen 525 kilometers east of Davao City, Davao del Sur at 5 a.m.
- It is expected to make landfall over Surigao del Sur or Davao Oriental on Sunday evening or early Monday morning.
The low pressure area (LPA) being monitored by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) developed into a tropical depression on Sunday morning, Dec. 17, and was named “Kabayan.”
In the PAGASA’s 5 a.m. public forecast, weather specialist Patrick del Mundo said the center of the eye of Kabayan was estimated to be 525 kilometers east of Davao City, Davao del Sur.
It is moving westward at 10 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.
Landfall
Kabayan is expected to make landfall over Surigao del Sur or Davao Oriental on Sunday evening, Dec. 17 or Monday morning, Dec. 18.
“It will cross the Mindanao-Visayas area and exit west of Puerto Princesa, Palawan on Monday or Tuesday (Dec. 19). It will exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday (Dec. 20),” del Mundo added.
He said Kabayan may continue to move west-northwestward across the Philippine archipelago over the next two days and is likely to maintain its strength until its landfall over Mindanao.
However, the possibility of Kabayan intensifying into a tropical storm before its landfall is not ruled out, he added.
The possibility that the tropical depression could weaken into an LPA as a result of “frictional effects associated with landfall” and then redevelop into a tropical depression after emerging over the Sulu Sea is also not ruled out, del Mundo also said.
Signal No. 1
Due to its anticipated effect of the approaching tropical depression, tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 was hoisted over the southern portion of Samar, southern portion of Eastern Samar, eastern and southern portions of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, the northern and eastern portions of Agusan del Sur, northern portion of Davao Oriental, eastern portion of Misamis Oriental, and Camiguin.
“Additional provinces in Visayas and Mindanao may be placed under Wind Signal No. 1 in the next bulletin,” PAGASA said.
“The wind signals warn the public of the general wind threat over an area due to the tropical cyclone,” it added.
PAGASA said the surge of the northeast monsoon or amihan will also bring gusty conditions for the next two days over Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, and Central Luzon.
Rainfall outlook
On Sunday, PAGASA said Surigao del Sur may see intense rainfall (100–200 millimeters), while Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, the eastern part of Agusan del Sur, and the northern parts of Davao Oriental and Davao de Oro may experience heavy rainfall (50–100 millimeters).
On Monday, intense rainfall may persist in Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, and Southern Leyte; and heavy rainfall in the southern portions of Eastern Samar and Samar, eastern and southern portions of Leyte, Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Siquijor, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, northern portion of Bukidnon, Agusan del Sur, and Agusan del Norte.
Moreover, the shear line that coincides with Kabayan’s passage may bring heavy rain to the eastern portion of Southern Luzon on Sunday and the eastern portion of Luzon on Monday.
Shear line is a weather system formed by the convergence of cold northeasterly winds and warm easterly winds.
