World AIDS Day, observed each year on Dec. 1, serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those affected by HIV and the ongoing efforts to combat the disease. Despite the progress made since the ’90s, HIV remains a significant concern in many countries. Let’s talk about the tireless efforts of individuals in our communities striving to create a safer space for those living with HIV.
Founded on principles of compassion and advocacy, the Duyan Foundation has emerged as an anchor of support for children affected by HIV in the Philippines. Pamela Magdaluyo, affectionately known as Pam, founded the organization under Project Red Ribbon. Duyan focuses on the care and management of children living with HIV and providing support to their families who are also facing discrimination and stigma. What sets Duyan apart is its commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges these children face, going beyond mere medical intervention.
Pamela’s journey into advocacy began when she encountered an orphaned child living with HIV. She vividly described the struggles the child faced, revealing how the parent died in denial of having the disease, subsequently affecting her child. Such stories emphasize the lack of knowledge, support, and the stigma faced by HIV-positive women during pregnancy.

“The ideal scenario is when an HIV-positive woman is diagnosed, she immediately receives counseling and medication during pregnancy,” explained microbiologist and public health specialist Shilpa Iyer. “This preventive measure significantly reduces the risk of vertical transmission to the child.”
Dr. Iyer, who has worked in HIV in Zambia and is currently with the World Health Organization on vaccine-preventable diseases, has been in the Philippines for over two years. As the wife of a diplomat assigned to Manila, she met Pam through a common connection with a history of supporting the Duyan Foundation, sparking her interest in the foundation's impactful work.
Systemic failures in knowledge dissemination and counseling often lead to tragic outcomes, as in the case of the child Pam first encountered. The lack of support not only resulted in the loss of the child’s mother but also placed the child at considerable risk.

Medication and beyond
In a transformative shift from just a few decades ago, individuals living with HIV can now lead normal lives, thanks to advancements in medication. Consistent use of antiretroviral drugs has made it possible to lower viral loads to undetectable levels, rendering the virus non-transmittable. For children with HIV, accessing medication tailored to their age and weight is crucial, as emphasized by Dr. Iyer.
While medication is free, challenges in the supply chain and procurement can hinder pediatric HIV medication availability. Magdaluyo highlighted the organization’s proactive efforts to address this issue by sourcing medications from multiple channels well in advance. Their goal is to ensure that no child is left without the necessary treatment.
Beyond clinical care, the Duyan Foundation adopts a holistic approach, providing shelter, psychosocial support, and programs that create a safe space for children to share their experiences. Addressing stigma and discrimination is a key focus, with various initiatives breaking down barriers and fostering a supportive community.
Dr. Iyer stressed the importance of addressing mental health, noting that the impact of HIV on one's mental well-being is often underestimated. To support the foundation's mission, Dr. Iyer provided guidance on grant applications, resulting in a 15,000-euro grant from the Irish government. This funding has enabled the Duyan Foundation to enhance shelter conditions, streamline medicine sourcing, and continue programs for those in need of a safe space.
Summing up the foundation's mission, Dr. Iyer said, “It’s about empowering these children to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. It’s not just about managing a medical condition, it’s about nurturing hope and resilience.”
In a world where the fight against HIV persists, organizations like the Duyan Foundation create a path forward. With a comprehensive approach, they demonstrate that lives can be empowered, and the narrative of HIV can be rewritten.

More than a lipstick
This year, MAC Cosmetics also amplified its commitment to the fight against HIV and AIDS in the Philippines. As of June 2023, over 1,100 individuals have been confirmed HIV-positive, underscoring the urgent need for continued awareness and support.
“Giving back to our community has always been core to our brand DNA,” said Aïda Moudachirous-Rebois, global chief marketing officer at MAC Cosmetics. “This World AIDS Day serves as another key moment to rally our community around our mission of creating an AIDS-free generation.”

Initiated in 1994 by MAC founders Frank Toskan and the late Frank Angelo, the Viva Glam campaign has been active for nearly three decades. Originating from their firsthand experience with the AIDS epidemic in Toronto, they created Viva Glam lipsticks, donating 100 percent of the selling price to organizations aiding those affected by the disease. Nearly three decades later, Viva Glam has raised over $520 million, making a substantial impact on the lives of individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. The fight is far from over, however, with more than 39 million people worldwide currently living with HIV.
On Dec. 1, MAC, in collaboration with artists, digital creators, and key opinion leaders, expressed solidarity by visiting the H4 Ward of San Lazaro Hospital. The visit was followed by an intimate luncheon with the press at Admiral Hotel, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness and promoting HIV/AIDS prevention.
