His Eminence lamented the hardships experienced by many including unemployment, hunger, and poverty.

“Let us be the light that gives hope and strength to those who are suffering,” said Cardinal Advincula in his homily on the first day of the ‘Simbang Gabi’ at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Manila on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Manila Cathedral rector Monsignor Rolando dela Cruz, vice rector Fr. Vicente Gabriel Bautista and Fr. Mico Dellera co celebrated the mass.

“May we be like St. John the Baptist who was the source of light for many during his time. In a society that is engulfed in darkness because of injustice, abuse, neglect and poverty, let us serve as the light as we try our best to maintain good and moral lives,” the Church leader said.

The prelate cited ways by which everyone can show concern for others such as giving words of encouragement or even simply by smiling.

“These can uplift one’s spirit and provide hope,” said the cardinal.

Cardinal Advincula expressed hope for the faithful to complete the nine day “Simbang Gab’ and accompany the Blessed Mother in her journey leading to the Birth of Christ.

The Misa de Gallo will culminate with the Christmas Eve mass on Dec. 24. Anticipated masses on the other hand will be until the evening of Dec. 23.

Cardinal Advincula earlier called for the voluntary wearing of face masks inside the church amid the rising cases in Covid-19 and other respiratory diseases.
