Toyota Motor PH to shift to 100% green energy

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) is pursuing its carbon neutrality goals by partnering with a local supplier to power its manufacturing plants and operations with green-backed electricity.

TMP signed a Retail Supply Contract (RSC) with Team (Philippines) Energy Corporation, which will allow it to supply 90 percent of TMP's total electricity requirement will green energy starting Dec. 26 this year.

Combined with TMP's existing 1.46-megawatt rooftop solar power system, the new energy source will enable the company to fulfill its 100 percent renewable energy (RE) ratio.

TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto said the energy shift will "neutralize TMP’s Scope 2 Emissions, particularly the indirect carbon dioxide emissions from purchased electricity for manufacturing operations."

“Such is a significant milestone for TMP and its mission to address climate change, making its automotive manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa City, Laguna the front-runner and early achiever of 100 percent RE ratio target for Toyota in the ASEAN region," he added.

TMP said it is committed to continue its decarbonization efforts towards its energy sources for manufacturing.

It has previously set the 2035 target date to transform its manufacturing plants into carbon-neutral facilities., in compliance to TMP's Net Zero Commitment or the  Toyota Environmental Challenge (TEC) 2050.

Aside from manufacturing, the company also targets to decarbonize its supply chains, logistics, and dealer networks.

Other companies have followed TMP in undertaking carbon-neutral operations through solar power facility investments or joining the government's Green Energy Option Program.

These firms include the Denso Ten Philippines Corporation, Hino Motors Philippines Corporation, Denso Philippines Corporation, and International Wiring Systems Philippines for suppliers, as well as Toyota Global City, Toyota Mabolo City, and Toyota Pasong Tamo for dealers.

Toyota suppliers and all established Toyota dealers nationwide (including Lexus Manila) are also certified under ISO 14001, as part of Toyota Green Purchasing Guidelines and Asia Pacific Eco-Dealership Program.
