West zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. has completed the construction of the Poblacion Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Muntinlupa that will enhance its services in Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, and Cavite.
In a statement on Friday, Dec. 15, Manny V. Pangilinan, Maynilad chairman, said the utility firm has allotted P11 billion for the new water facility in line with their service improvement investments.
“The project is part of Maynilad’s four-year service enhancement program requiring an investment of P220 billion into our entire water and sewerage facilities,” Pangilinan said.
Meanwhile, Leonor C. Cleofas, Metropolitan Waterworks Sewerage System (MWSS) administrator, said that Maynilad's investment in the WTP was a response to President Marcos' directive to address water security.
“The MWSS board of trustees approved the water security pillars which are the foundation of Metro Manila’s short to long-term water security solutions and will provide sufficient water to the needs of the 20 million residents serviced by our concessionaires, even beyond the year 2050,” Cleofas said.
As heat and climate change are expected to rise by the first and second quarters of 2024, President Marcos called on pertinent agencies to prioritize the completion of all water pipes and other related projects, especially for those regions battling water scarcity.
The membrane-based facility, which began construction in 2021, was made to boost the service of approximately one million people with frequent limitations due to the water quality of Laguna Lake brought by climate change.
According to the water company, the WTP was designed with a maximum capacity of 150 million liters per day (MLD) and will be Maynilad’s third infrastructure to rely on Laguna Lake as an alternative raw water source.
Maynilad also reassured that the new water plant adheres to the Department of Health (DOH) Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water.
They said that the facility has a comprehensive, multi-stage treatment process with Dissolved Air Flotation, Disc Cloth Filter, Biological Aerated Filter, Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis, and Chlorination for disinfection activities.
