The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Thursday, Dec. 14 said the agency is eyeing the deployment of 35 Filipino doctors to provide aid in war-torn Gaza.

PRC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman Richard Gordon in a televised interview emphasized that this decision is currently in the works, despite the fact that the Palestinian Red Crescent is the primary authority in charge of operations in the area.
However, the PRC chief underscored that the safety of the medical personnel will remain a priority.
"Their safety is of utmost importance because they will be there to alleviate the suffering of the children, the women, the elderly and the vulnerable,” Gordon said.
Meanwhile, he expressed disagreement with their placement in areas such as Palestinian hospitals with underground facilities.
"I want standalone camps for them where they will be identified as part of the Red Cross," he said. "I cannot just ask them to go.”
PRC role in Israel-Gaza war
Ten days after Hamas bombed Israel and took captives in October, Gordon called for an immediate international response.
He proposed sending ships, whether military or commercial, including cruise ships, to Gaza to serve as hospital ships amid escalating casualties from the ongoing war.
“We were able to put up full-fledged emergency hospital tents during Yolanda in partnership with the Red Cross societies of Finland and Canada," he said.
"We can do it in Gaza too. We need to set up standalone camps to ensure that our Filipino doctors will be safe,” he added.
Moreover, due to this initiative, Gordon received a commend from the Egyptian Red Crescent CEO Ramy El Nazer.
“The deployment of a field hospital, under the auspices of the Palestinian Red Crescent, is a testament to the Philippine Red Cross’ dedication to alleviating the dire conditions in Gaza,” Nazer said in a letter dated Nov. 21.
