One of the best meteor showers of the year, the Geminids, will show its full gleam during its peak activity on Friday, Dec. 15, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
In the PAGASA’s astronomical diary, it estimated that 150 meteors per hour will likely be produced by the Geminid meteor shower.
“It becomes visible when the constellation Gemini, the Twins, rises above the eastern horizon at around 7:13 p.m. and is most likely to put on spectacular displays at around 2 a.m. when its radiant point is highest in the sky,” PAGASA said.
It pointed out that the meteor shower is expected to reach its peak activity at around 3 a.m. on Dec. 15.
“The meteor shower will reach its peak near the time of the new moon, presenting minimal interference from moonlight,” PAGASA said.
The Geminid meteor shower was from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon and is active from Dec. 4 to Dec. 17.
According to PAGASA, meteor showers can be seen with the naked eye and do not require any special equipment such as telescopes or binoculars.
