PPA expects 5.1M port passengers for Yuletide season, says security measures now in place
The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is now conducting all the necessary preparations to accommodate around 5.1 million passengers that are expected to troop to various ports across the country for the Holiday season.
The projected number of port passengers is higher compared to last year’s 4.7 million due to easing of travel restrictions.
PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago said the significant increase in passenger traffic starting December 16 when travelers begin to go back to their hometown and go on vacation, until Jan. 15 next year when they start to go back to school and work.
“We have already intensified the security measures in all our ports and implemented various ways to ensure fast and comfortable travel for our kababayan,” said Santiago.
One of the ports that traditionally accommodates a large number of passengers is the Batangas Port in Batangas City with around 17,000 to 20,000 passengers daily during peak season.
In preparation for the influx of passengers, Santiago said they will be opening this month the extension of the Passenger Terminal Building which would accommodate around 8,000 passengers compared to only 3,500 capacity before.
Aside from the Port of Batangas, other ports with high passenger traffic during long weekends are the Port Management Office (PMO) Panay/ Guimaras, Mindoro, Negros Occidental/ Bacolod/ Banago/ BREDCO, Negros Oriental/ Siquijor.
To assist passengers, Santiago said he already requested the shipping lines to increase the number of their passenger vessels in order to prevent large numbers of people from being stranded in ports.
He then called on the passengers to plan their travel early to avoid inconveniences in sea travel.
On the part of the security measures, Santiago said he already instructed the Port Police Department to conduct regular patrol and inspection in all port facilities, especially at the entry points for passengers and cargo.
The PPA earlier placed all its port personnel under red alert status following the Marawi City bombing.
While it is not mandatory, Santiago also asked passengers to wear a face mask following the confirmed reports of “walking pneumonia” infection in the country.
