CEBU CITY – Security measures are in place for “Simbang Gabi” (dawn Mass) starting on December 16, the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO-7) said.

Some 6,000 police personnel will be deployed in various areas in Region 7 for Simbang Gabi. Bulk of them will be deployed in churches as well as terminals, malls, and tourist destinations.
Police Lt. Col. Gerard Ace Pelare, spokesperson of PRO-7 chief Police Brig. Anthony Aberin, said that the number of personnel deployed this year was determined based on last year’s crime statistics in a particular area that the PRO-7 reviewed.
“The instruction of our regional director is to make sure that the deployment of the personnel is strategic,” Pelare said.
Pelare said while they will focus on securing these masses, the fight against all forms of illegal activities will remain relentless.
A few days ago, Aberin inspected major churches in this city to assess the real situation on the ground, said Pelare.
Based on “extensive and well-coordinated intelligence monitoring,” the PRO-7 has not received reports of possible threats in the region.
“But we will not be complacent. Police visibility will be increased especially in crowded areas,” said Pelare.
