5.1-earthquake hits Surigao del Sur


BUTUAN CITY – A magnitude-5.1 earthquake rocked Surigao del Sur on Monday morning, December 11.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake was recorded at 6:52 a.m. and its epicenter was 123 kilometers (kms) southeast of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur.

The tremor had a shallow depth of only 10 kms, Phivolcs said, and was caused by the Philippine Trench.

Phivolcs does not anticipate any damage and injuries from the tectonic earthquake.

The Surigao del Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported no damage or injury from the earthquake.

Three minutes earlier 6:49 a.m., a magnitude-four tectonic earthquake Surigao del Sur and its epicenter was plotted 138 kms southeast of Cagwait with a depth of 33 kms.
