PBBM's decision to focus on 17 Pinoy seamen shows 'strong leadership'--Magsino

President Marcos displayed "strong leadership" in his decision to skip the World Climate Action Summit (COP28), according to OFW Party-list Rep. Marissa "Del Mar" Magsino.

"One of the beacons of hope we cling to in crises is strong leadership, and we laud President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. for being an anchor amidst the fear and uncertainty of the seafarers and their families." Magsino said in a statement Friday, Dec. 1.

The Chief Executive earlier announced that he would no longer attend the COP28 in Dubai amid what he described as “important developments" in the hostage situation involving 17 Filipino seafarers in the Red Sea.

"His decision to skip the [COP28] to focus on the release of our 17 Filipino seafarers shows his priorities as the head of the government," said Magsino a member of the House minority bloc.

"His action is also consistent with his pronouncements on prioritizing the welfare of our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), including our seafarers," she added.

"As he convenes a meeting today on the dispatch of a high-level delegation to Tehran, Iran, we hope and pray this will bring our Filipino seafarers a step closer to safely going home to their families, more so in a season where everyone revels in festivities and as we gear up this December for 'International Migrants Day'," she said.

Providing a background on the special occasion, Magsino said that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on Dec. 18, 1990 on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

In commemoration of the event, Dec. 18 of every year was proclaimed.

"Thus, we also call on the powerful nations to come together, especially those involved in the reported root cause of the hijacking, to actively help in the peaceful resolution of the crisis as we aim to protect the lives of our seafarers, our heroic migrant workers, who are innocent victims in this situation," the lady solon said.
