In his declaration, Bishop Mercado cited the faithful’s long-standing devotion to Our Lady of Good Events over the last 400 years.

“With her maternal protection, the clergy, religious, and laity of the diocese have grown in faith and trust in God’s presence, and are increased daily by the Church’s sacraments,” the Church leader wrote in a decree signed on Nov. 29.

The decree was announced on Nov. 30 during a holy mass at the St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Parañaque City, where the revered image of the patroness is enthroned. The announcement was made as the faithful celebrate the feast of St. Andrew.

“The profound love and devotion for Our Lady led to the canonical coronation of her revered image in 2000,” said Bishop Mercado.

The miraculous wooden image of Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso (Madonna and Child) was brought to the Philippines by Spanish Augustinian missionaries and enthroned at the Parañaque Cathedral in 1625.

Devotion to Our Lady of Buen Suceso is actively being promoted by the diocese. Her feast day is celebrated every year on Aug. 10.
