Met Gala 2024’s theme has been revealed and here’s what we know about it so far

The Costume Institute’s spring 2024 exhibit is titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”

Hailed as the biggest night in the fashion industry, the Met Gala brings together celebrities and A-listers from different fields as they grace the red carpet at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York wearing garbs that celebrate its spring exhibition theme. For its 2024 edition, the museum announces that its theme will center on The Costume Institute's permanent collection.

Dubbed “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” the exhibition will feature approximately 250 items, chronicling over 400 years of fashion. These pieces can no longer be worn on the human body. The exhibit will include pieces designed by Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and Charles Frederick Worth ballgown from 1877, among others.

Through a social media post, The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the exhibition's pieces will be "visually connected through images of nature—a metaphor for the impermanence of fashion as well as a means to explore ideas of renewal and rebirth." These permanent pieces will be displayed with contemporary works, creating a core exhibit with three additional zones namely Land, Sea, and Sky. The museum will spotlight these design masterpieces with the help of modern technology such as augmented reality, AI, CGI, animation, projection, and soundscapes.

Although the exhibition's theme has been unveiled, the dress code for the gala has yet to be revealed. The Met Gala will take place on its traditional schedule, the first Monday in May, which is May 6, 2024. While the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit will be open for public viewing on May 10, 2024.
