Timor-Leste president arrives in Manila for official visit
Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta arrived in Manila on Wednesday, Nov. 8, to advance the relations with the Philippines of the sole Southeast Asian nation that is still not part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Horta landed in the country at around 2 p.m. with a welcome ceremony by Philippine Ambassador to Timor-Leste Belinda Ante and Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Assistant General Manager Manuel Gonzales.

The Timor-Leste president is set to meet with President Marcos at the Malacanañ Palace, where they will discuss areas of cooperation on technical, political, educational and economic partnerships, among others, on Friday, Nov. 10.
During a bilateral meeting in May in Indonesia on the sidelines of ASEAN Summit, where Timor-Leste has an observer status, Marcos expressed Manila's support for Timor-Leste on various aspects.
"In the Philippines, you have a partner. We have always been supportive," Marcos told Timor-Leste Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak by that time.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will be present during Horta's engagements in the country.
During the 42nd ASEAN Summit, Timor-Leste joined as an observer.
President Marcos expressed his excitement over the Asian neighbor's journey towards becoming a democratic state, and eventually becoming an ASEAN member state.
In May, the 10-member regional bloc adopted a roadmap for Timor-Leste's full membership, following conditional approval for it to become ASEAN's 11th member.
According to Ramos-Horta, Timor-Leste will "ideally" become a full-fledged ASEAN member in 2025 even though the country remains open to other time frames recommended by other Southeast Asian leaders.
