Soldier killed in NPA encounter

FORT MAGSAYSAY, Nueva Ecija – A soldier was killed in an encounter with the New People’s Army in Barangay San Fernando, Laur, Nueva Ecija on Sunday, October 8.

Major Gen. Andrew D. Costelo, Army 7th Infantry Division commander, identified the fatality as Private First Class Sher Nelson B. Casayuran of the 84^th Infantry Battalion.

Casayuran sustained a bullet wound and was taken to the Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija where he was declared dead.

The military received information from residents of Barangay San Fernando that about 10 NPA members were terrorizing them.

Soldiers were deployed and caught up with the communist rebels resulting in the encounter which lasted minutes.

Costelo condemned the continued harassment of NPA rebels on peace-loving communities in Laur to force them to provide logistical and operational support benefiting their cause.

“Our troops mourn for the loss of PFC Casayuran. His bravery, dedication, and heroism will not be forgotten as he offered his ultimate sacrifice just to protect the people of Laur,” said Costelo.

Costelo assured the people of Laur that they are relentless in pursuing the NPA in their area.
