Paduano: All linked to anomalous Mexico, Pampanga land deals to be held accountable

All persons involved in the controversial land deals in Mexico, Pampanga will be held accountable, ABANG LINGKOD Party-list Rep. Joseph Stephen Paduano vowed.

He made this statement during a hearing of the House Committee on Public Accounts Tuesday, Nov.7 on the P149-million deals that went through former Mexico town mayor Teddy Tumang.

“Akala niyo makalusot kayo ah. Anyway, this is not yet the end of this hearing. Hindi pa tayo tapos dito, yan ang sinasabi ko. Lahat ng involved dito ay mananagot,” Paduano, the committee chairman, said.

(You thought you could get away. Anyway, this is not yet the end of this hearing. We're not done here yet, that's what I'm saying. Everyone involved in this will be held accountable.)

Paduano slammed the land deals entered by Mexico’s local government unit (LGU) with businessman Aedy Yang for its supposed “questionable nature”.

The House panel grilled Yang over the purchase of hectares of land originally for realty development. The land would then be sold to the town’s LGU for a huge profit.

After acquiring the hectares of land for just P300 per square meter, Yang was able to sell them at P2,700 and P2,950 per square meter.

These parcels were described as “swampy” and were usually flooded, thus making them a questionable purchase for the municipal government.

A new municipal town hall and convention center was supposed to be built on Yang’s lot and its neighboring lots.

“And this is happening siguro matagal na (maybe for a long time),” said Paduano. “It’s been a practice na mali (that is wrong), na (that) you’re violating the law. And again, you are all liable.”

The Office of the Ombudsman had previously ordered the dismissal of Tumang as town mayor over alleged irregularities in the procurement of construction materials from 2009 to 2010. --Dexter Barro II
