Ruben Gonzales and Korean partner Yun Seong Chung stumbled in their opening match to make an early exit in the Matsuyama Challenger on Wednesday, Nov. 8, in Japan.

The unseeded pair fought back in the second frame before losing steam in the third to bow to Tunisia’s Moez Echargui and Germany’s Benjamin Hassan, 3-6, 6-0, 5-10.
A victory for Gonzales and Chung could have booked them a quarterfinals berth in this $80,000 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event against either Japanese third seeds Toshihide Matsui and Kaito Uesugi or Chinese Taipei’s Yu Hsiou Hsu and South Korea’s MinKyu Song.
Gonzales is currently the highest rated Filipino male player in the ATP with a doubles rating of No. 179.
Meanwhile, Francis Casey Alcantara and Chinese partner Yunchaokete Bu are competing against second seed Zdenek Kolar of Czech Republic and Karol Drzewiecki of Poland for a spot in the quarters.
Alcantara, ranked No. 236, is coming off a semifinal finish at the Shenzhen (Luohu) Challenger with a different partner in Chinese Sun Fajing.
