Farm output declined in the third quarter due to weak performance in crops and fisheries, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported.
The latest data from the PSA revealed that the value of production in agriculture and fisheries, adjusted for constant 2018 prices, decreased by 0.3 percent to P412.41 billion from July to September.
This decline comes after a 1.2 percent contraction in the second quarter and a reversal of the 1.3 percent growth registered in the same quarter last year.
The agriculture, forestry, and fishery sector make up a fraction of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), accounting for less than 10 percent.
Crop production– which accounted for 54 percent of the total production in agriculture and fisheries– shrank by 0.4 percent to P229.69 billion from the second quarter’s P240.832 billion.
Improvements in the value of crop production were seen in onion at 165.1 percent, tobacco at 122.1 percent, mango at 15.2 percent, and cacao at 5.5 percent.
Meanwhile, crops that saw heavy reductions in value include sugarcane down 26.4 percent, potato down 26 percent, and mongo down 21.1 percent.
Livestock production– which contributed 16 percent to the total value of production in agriculture and fisheries– increased to P66.11 billion, which was 2.5 percent higher than in the third quarter a year earlier.
Livestocks such as hog and goats saw improvements at 3.3 percent and 0.1 percent in the value of production, while drops were seen in carabao and dairy.
The value of poultry, which contributed a 15.7 percent share to the total value of production in agriculture and fisheries, increased to P64.89 billion or 2.9 percent.
All poultry products posted positive growth except for duck eggs which reduced to 2.2 percent in the third quarter
For fisheries, its production value dropped to P58.72 billion or 6.1 percent. It shared 14.2 percent of the total value of production in agriculture and fisheries.
In particular, decreases were noted for tiger prawn (sugpo)and bigeye tuna (tambakol/bariles) at 41.1 percent while increases were seen in roundscad (galunggong), big-eyed scad (matangbaka), and indian mackerel (alumahan).
All in all, the value of production in agriculture and fisheries in the third quartered reached P522.58 billion, which was 4.3 percent higher than the same quarter last year at P500.896 billion.
