Expert highlights 18% 'drop' in Covid-19 cases; need for more booster vaccines
Infectious disease expert Rontgene Solante said the 18-percent decrease in Covid-19 cases in the country is a significant development, but he cautioned that people should not get complacent just yet.

“This is a significant development. It means that when cases decrease, we already have a high level of immunity in the population, and at the same time, it's possible that there's a time when the Covid variant is no longer as highly transmissible as we've seen with previous Covid variants,” he said in Filipino in PTV’s Bagong Pilipinas televised briefing.
Although the country's Covid-19 vaccination rate is comparatively high, Solante—who also serves as president of the Philippine College of Physicians—voiced concern about the lack of booster shots, which is a critical problem in the ongoing fight against the virus.
He reminded the public, particularly the vulnerable population not to be complacent, saying, “we are not entirely safe because we might still be exposed to the virus.”
The expert emphasized the persistent risk of severe infection among the vulnerable population if infected with Covid-19.
The call for continued vigilance and adherence to safety measures remains essential, even as cases decline and vaccine-related challenges persist, he added.
