Ex-pres. Duterte on lawmaker's exit from PDP-Laban: 'Those not in tune with us can leave'

Former president Rodrigo Duterte, the chairman of the once-ruling political party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), welcomed the resignation of Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio "Dong" Gonzales Jr. after the lawmaker named him as the person who maligned the House of Representatives.

The ex-chief executive made the remark on SMNI's "Gikan Sa Masa, Para sa Masa" show on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
He also asked anyone "not in tune with us" to leave the party as he would be okay even if he became the last PDP-Laban member since they could just "rebuild the party."
"I respect his decision to go out of the party, and I would encourage those who are not in tune with us or hindi nyo nagustuhan (you are not happy), you're always welcome (to) go out," Duterte said.
"Even if I remain to be the only one in PDP, okay lang sa akin. Wala akong problema. Even if ako lang ang maiwan sa PDP sa buong Pilipinas, okay na ako, wala akong dynamics diyan (it's okay with me. I don't have a problem. Even if I remain the last PDP in the whole Philippines, I'm okay, I don't have dynamics there)," he added.
The former president stressed that he is still a member of PDP-Laban as the party hasn't kicked him out yet.
“So, kung umalis kayong lahat, okay lang (if you all go, it’s okay),” he furthered.
Duterte, however, issued a reminder that the elections are "just around the corner" and PDP-Laban would have to field "(other) fresh personalities or faces."
"We can rebuild the party anytime," he said.
These remarks were made after Gonzales resigned from the party right before naming Duterte as the person who called the House of Representatives a "rotten" institution, referring to last month's interview on the same show.
This came out right on the House plenary floor when Albay 1st District Rep. Edcel Lagman questioned the background of House Resolution 1414, which calls on lawmakers to uphold the "integrity and honor of the House of Representatives and [express] appreciation, solidarity, and support for the leadership of Speaker Martin Romualdez."
Gonzales, Pampanga 3rd district representative, sponsored the resolution, which his fellow lawmakers said was a result of the attacks made against the House recently.
"The one who uttered that word is our chairman from PDP-Laban. Before I will answer, I will resign now as member and officer of PDP-Laban. The former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte was the one who said that, Mr. Chairman," the lawmaker said during the House's first plenary session after a five-week break.
In October, Duterte called the House of Representatives "the most rotten institution" and alleged that lawmakers have pork barrel. He also said he would demand for an audit in case Romualdez runs for president.
His tirade against the lower chamber, which was once his biggest ally, came after it realigned his daughter's, Vice President Sara Duterte, P650-million proposed intelligence funds for 2024.
