The Bureau of Customs (BOC) stopped misdeclared agricultural products from entering and being released at the Port of Subic.
After receiving credible derogatory information, the Port of Subic took action by issuing eight Pre-Lodgment Control Orders and two Alert Orders for a combined total of 15 40-foot container vans.
These shipments were declared to contain frozen lobster balls and frozen Surimi crab.
However, upon conducting a thorough physical examination of all the alerted shipments, it was discovered that they actually contained a variety of fresh vegetables, including potatoes, carrots, and broccoli.
“The seized misdeclared agricultural products will be subjected to seizure and forfeiture proceedings for violation of Section 1113 in relation to Section 117 of the CMTA and DA A.O. No. 09 Series of 2010, and DA A.O. No. 18 Series of 2000,” the BOC said.
“Similarly, the records of the subject importation shall be referred to the Bureau Action Teams Against Smuggling for corresponding case build up and eventual prosecution of personalities responsible for the foiled smuggling attempt,” the agency added.
Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio expressed his appreciation for the dedicated efforts of the personnel at the Port of Subic in protecting the country's borders from the potential risks posed by agricultural products.
He emphasized that if it weren't for the timely detection of the thwarted smuggling attempt, a number of containers carrying hazardous agricultural products would have entered the country.
This would have posed a threat not only to the health and safety of the public, but also to the local agricultural industry, he added.
The BOC-Port of Subic, led by Acting District Collector Ciriaco Ugay, remains dedicated to enforcing customs and allied laws strictly. Their goal is to facilitate the release of only legally imported goods.
Ugay stated that the interception demonstrates the Port's commitment to safeguarding the country's borders and preventing illegal activities that can threaten our nation's safety and economic stability.
