The Philippines generated $10.36 million in overall sales from the participation of 15 exhibitors in food and non-food sectors at the recently concluded 20th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
The DTI said in a statement that fresh durian dominated more than half of the total sales valued at $5.4 million; followed by natural-based drink options such as calamansi and energy drinks, and banana chips, contributing more than $1 million each.
Several of the 15 participating small and medium enterprises (SMEs) also successfully booked orders on top of their onsite retail performance.
Filipino food exhibitors which participated in the expo include Brics Ventures, Dataj Aquafarm Inc., Enature Energy Drinks Philippines Inc., Eng Seng Food Products, Lighthouse Cooperative, OneAsia Trader, Raspina Tropical Fruits Inc., Soyuz Foods International Inc., and 22 Propack Asia Corporation.
Non-food exhibitors include BDO Unibank Inc., Bebebalm, Inc., Jegen S.W.E. Enterprises, Kitsilver, Santa Praxedes Sarakat Women Weavers Association, and R&V Fly Global Travel and Tours.
The Philippine participation is part of the country’s long-standing relations with top export trading partner China, whose import activities are valued to reach more than $5 trillion in the next five years.
The CAEXPO held at Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center (NICEC) in Nanning, Guangxi Province, China last Sept. 16 to 19 was joined by 1,953 company exhibitors from 43 countries, including the Philippines.
Last April, the Philippines successfully delivered its first shipment of fresh durian to China, signaling the activation of the agreement for direct market access between the countries during the state visit of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in January 2023.
The top sales performance at CAEXPO 2023 of durian exhibitors from both retail and wholesale buyers reinforces the growing demand for the local durian variety in the global market.
The Puyat variety from Davao boasts a richer flavor profile than its regional counterparts with its creaminess on top of its expected sweetness.
"Partnerships are key. The stronger we make these relationships work, the better our prospects for enhanced export trade development," CITEM Executive Director Edward Fereira emphasized during the opening ceremony of the Philippine National Pavilion.
Fereira highlighted the importance of business continuity with China not just for the growth of the Philippine export industry, but also to foster goodwill and strategic partnerships within Asia and other regions.
At the sidelines of the event during the Philippine Investment Forum, organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) and led by DTI Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo, last Sept. 16, DTI presented in detail the country’s investment offerings, particularly in the fields of renewable energy, information technology (IT), and agri-agro industry in the City of Charm (COC) Tuguegarao City.
Meanwhile, PEZA Director General Tereso Panga focused on the country’s thrust in addressing the challenges of climate change, amidst embracing digital technology to further economic growth and simultaneously bring about safer and sustainable business environments.
The delegation also partook in meetings for potential global business ventures in the infrastructure and technology sector, as well as other activities toward more regional investment cooperation during the event.
DTI also noted that this year’s Philippine participation is part of its preparation for being the Country of Honor at the CAEXPO in 2025.
