The chemical spill in Bauan, Batangas that forced the evacuation of 53 families is already under control, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
OCD Administrator Ariel Nepomuceno said the chemicals that reportedly leaked from the nearby depot already dissipated, adding that the containment and clean-up operations on the affected shoreline conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) also helped in expediting the entire process.
“The recent chemical spill in Batangas is now under control, and all evacuees have safely returned to their homes,” said Nepomuceno.
A total of 53 families composed of 248 people were evacuated due to the health risk posed by the chemical spill on Nov. 4. They are all from the coastal area of Barangay San Miguel.
The spill occurred when two drums of hazardous substance, solvent naphtha, leaked due to an "untightened drain plug" of the storage tank.
Naphtha solvent is commonly used as an additive in paints and thinner products. Exposure to this chemical can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.
Prolonged and excessive exposure may result in more severe health consequences.
The spill affected an area of 6,000 square meters, and fish kill incidents were reported as a result.
Nepomuceno said investigation is now being conducted to determine the liability of the company.
"In collaboration with our regional counterparts in Calabarzon, we will continue to monitor the impact of this incident and take necessary actions. Ongoing investigations are currently being conducted by the authorities,” said Nepomuceno.
“Additionally, we strongly urge companies to exercise caution and implement stringent measures to prevent similar incidents," he added.
