Gibo graces 'Belenismo' in Tarlac; stresses importance of 'bayanihan' spirit

Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoro Jr. spearheaded the grand opening of the 16th "Belenismo sa Tarlac" at Camp Aquino in San Miguel, Tarlac on Monday, Nov. 6, where he stressed the importance of the Filipino "bayanihan" spirit. 

Belenismo sa Tarlac is an annual Christmas tradition which showcases the creativity of residents in making a "belen" depicting the Christmas Nativity or the birth of Jesus Christ in a manger in Bethlehem.

One of the highlights of the event was the unveiling of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Belen crafted by the troops of the Armor Division of the Philippine Army. It was witnessed by AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr.

The AFP Belen "manifests their [soldiers'] exceptional skills and unwavering commitment to both their duty to protect the nation and their strong ties with the local community," Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) commander Lt. Gen. Fernyl Buca said.

Teodoro underscored the importance of events like Belenismo sa Tarlac in fostering a strong sense of community and preserving Filipino culture.

Meanwhile, Buca emphasized the significance of the military's involvement in cultural and community events as it showcases their "commitment to both national defense and the well-being of the Filipino people."

The Belenismo sa Tarlac was initiated in 2007 by the Tarlac Heritage Foundation. It aims to promote the art of Belen-making and foster the spirit of "bayanihan" among the people of Tarlac. 

Since then, the annual tradition has become a celebrated showcase of Filipino craftsmanship and community spirit. 

Prior to the Belenismo, Teodoro and Brawner also visited the headquarters of NOLCOM at Camp Aquino and toured its recently refurbished Command Operations Center (COC). 

Teodoro and Brawner discussed with Buca the strategic importance of NOLCOM and its critical role in safeguarding the peace, security, and development in the communities in north and central Luzon.
