A group of congressmen are pitching the relocation of the House of Representatives, including the construction of a new House building.
The suggestion was embodied in House Resolution (HR) No.1390, filed by Camarines Sur 2nd district Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr., Senior Deputy Speaker Pampanga 3rd district Rep. Aurelio Gonzales, Jr., and Quezon 2nd district Rep. David Suarez.
The resolution seeks the formation of an ad hoc committee that would consider and study such relocation and construction.
HR No.1390 states that, with the New Senate Building in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig set to start partial operations in July 2024, the House should likewise consider transferring to the same area.
Doing so would lead to “better communication and coordination of legislative work”, the resolution said.
The House and Senate comprise Philippine Congress, which is bicameral in nature.
HR No.1390 proposes the construction of a new "modern" building that respects green spaces, vibrant, forward-thinking, but still uniquely Filipino”.
The accessibility to efficient public transport options such as buses, shuttles, and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) system, connectivity to major thoroughfares, airports, and other key areas in Metro Manila are among the key considerations in the relocation efforts.
“Proximity to other government agencies, multinational corporations, leading local businesses, and tech startups should also be taken into account for access to different sorts of Filipinos from every walk of life,” the resolution read.
Likewise, the availability of funds for the proposed site and building construction should also be considered by the ad hoc committee. --Dexter Barro II
