House Speaker Martin Romualdez assured journalists in the country Monday, Nov. 6 that the government stands with them in the aftermath of the shocking killing of radio program host Juan Jumalon during the latter's own livestream.

"To Filipino journalists: Your voices matter. Your stories matter. We stand with you and will continue to advocate for your safety and the right to perform your duties without intimidation or harm," Romualdez said in a statement Monday, Nov. 6.

"Together, we will strive to put an end to these senseless acts of violence and uphold the sanctity of free expression in the Philippines," stressed the Leyte 1st district representative.

On Sunday, Nov. 5, Jumalon--fondly known as DJ Johnny Walker of 94.7 Calamba Gold FM--was shot dead by an unidentified gunman inside his home.

The incident took place while the radioman was conducting a livestream of Facebook. This meant that netizens saw Jumalon's gruesome end.

For decades, the Philippines has held the unsavory reputation of being among the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.

"Any attack or violence against members of the media is unacceptable and deeply troubling. We must ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are brought to justice," said Romualdez, president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with DJ Johnny Walker's family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging time," said the Speaker.

"The freedom of the press is a cornerstone of our democracy. Every journalist deserves the right to exercise their profession without fearing for their safety or their lives," he further said.
